Littell supplies large capacity "backed-up" straightener
Littell has supplied a top tier supplier in the South with a large capacity, backed-up straightener.
This series of Littell straighteners can process material up to .162 thick at 72 wide.
The Littell design of heavy-duty straighteners allows for a wider range of materials. Smaller diameter work rolls allow for greater material penetration due to the fact that the roll-to-roll centerlines are also reduced. Depending on the width at the particular thickness, the penetration of the rolls creates pressure on the rolls. Pressure will then create the force of deflection. Deflection can create havoc with the material that you are trying to straighten as well as the internal components of the straightener that you are using.
By backing up this series of straighteners, the Littell design engineers have effectively brought the deflection capability to a value of zero.
This maintains the parallelism and reduces the load on the roll journals and gears for longer working life of the unit. Along with the backing up the upper rolls, the gear faces at the end of the work rolls are wider. The end of the rolls also have anti-friction bearing outboard supports for additional support.
What has actually happened is that there is in effect a 'bridge' surrounding the upper rolls. This is where the advantage of the Littell backed up design really shines in it's ability to process the thicker gauge materials without having to go to a larger roll diameter machine.
